Bullying Awareness and Prevention

Good morning. Today is the last day of our Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week.

We have heard some great ideas all week about how you can Choose Action to be STOP hate so everyone feels they belong, are accepted, cared for and welcomed. We would like every student to create a pledge about how you will choose action. We hope you will remember your pledge and continue to #ChooseAction to be STOP hate. Because you can.

We look forward to seeing your pledges around the school.

This week is Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week in Peel.  We know it happens. We see it in class, in our hallways, outside or on social media. Someone takes a joke too far and ends up hurting someone, making them feel excluded, put-down or scared. We all have choices. When we choose to laugh, we are part of the problem. When we choose to do nothing, we are part of the problem. We can choose to be a part of the solution by disrupting hate, stereotypes and assumptions.

Did you know...

●1 in 10 Canadian online teens say they have experienced online bullying on social networking sites.

●More than 1/3 of Canadian teens with a profile have seen mean or inappropriate comments about someone they know.

●14% say they have seen mean or inappropriate comments about themselves on social networks.

●90% of Canadians would support a law that would make it illegal to use any electronic means to coerce, intimidate, harass or cause other substantial emotional distress.

What do we need to know about online hate?

●Harassing messages, posts and photos can be distributed quickly to a very wide audience and can be extremely difficult to delete once they've been sent or posted.

●Because cyberbullying happens online, bullies may not witness first-hand the pain they're causing

●Sharing hateful messages ('liking' a post or passing it on) becomes part of the problem NOT the solution

●When you see online hate: do not share, block & report it immediately.

Bullying Awareness and Prevention

Did you know…

64 percent of kids have been bullied at school.

12 percent were bullied once a week or more.

13 percent of students reported that they bullied other students regularly.

72 percent observed bullying at school.

But only 40 percent of students said they ever tried to intervene.

Did you know that you have the power to make it all stop?

In majority of cases, bullying stops within 10 seconds when peers intervene or do not support the bullying behaviour. How will you take action to disrupt hate? What strategies will you use to help?

 We are asking each class to create a #ChooseAction pledge.  We look forward to seeing what your pledge is!

Bullying Awareness and Prevention week

Good morning,

Today marks the beginning of Bullying Awareness and Prevention week. Our theme this week is: #chooseACTION to STOP hate.


Will you stand up when you hear someone making a joke that is hurtful? Will you look out for someone who needs a friend? Will you find a way to make someone feel better, and intervene if you see or hear someone making somebody feel worse? We all have choices. We can choose to laugh. We can choose to look away. Or we can choose action. Refuse to stay silent and use your voice to disrupt hate. You belong here. Hate doesn’t. How will YOU #chooseACTION to stop hate?

It's starting to getting really cold in the library... The Scholastic Arctic Adventure Book Fair starts tomorrow. Don't forget to sign up for a class preview so you can check out all the cool books and materials. 

The library will be open for book exchange from after the Remembrance Day Assembly until period 5. The library will be closed period 6 and 7 to set up the book fair.

Eldorado Winds - Remembrance Day

If you are in the Eldorado Winds Concert Band, please don't forget to bring the following on MONDAY for the Remembrance Day assembly:

3) Wear all black uniform

On Monday morning, check in for attendance with your homeroom teacher and get your poppy. Then, go straight to the music room to set-up your chair, music stand and instrument (Rm. 108).

Celebrating Indigenous Heritage Month

Treaties Recognition Week was introduced in 2016 to honour the importance of treaties and to help Ontarians learn more about treaty rights and treaty relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people. This year, Treaties Recognition Week will take place from November 4 to 8, 2019.

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC) has issued 94 Calls to Action, which include calls for schools and communities to teach students about Treaties. Addressing the TRC’s Calls to Action are embedded in Peel’s commitment to achieve inclusion for all through continuous progress on equity. The Peel District School Board is proud to support Treaties Recognition Week to help bring awareness to students and staff about their collective treaty obligations in Canada.

Take some time in class today to discuss and learn more about treaty rights and treaty relationships.
